Mara Thorpe practices in all areas of matrimonial and family law—including negotiation of prenuptial, separation and other family law-related agreements as well as litigation of divorce, custody, paternity, adoption, support and guardianship matters in the supreme court, surrogate’s court and family court.

She has also argued numerous appeals in the appellate division and the New York State Court of Appeals.

Ms. Thorpe was a family court judge of the State of New York from 1979 to 1988. She then left to enter private practice as a member of Morrison Cohen Singer & Weinstein, LLP in its matrimonial and family law department. While a member of the judiciary, she was a civil court judge in New York County by assignment from 1981 to 1982. In 2003, she co-founded Cohen Lans LLP, a predecessor of Cohen Clair Lans Greifer & Simpson LLP. Ms. Thorpe has also served on the Mayor’s Advisory Committee on the judiciary for many years.

Ms. Thorpe has been selected as a “Super Lawyer” by Super Lawyers Magazine, and as one of New York’s “Best Lawyers” by Best Lawyers in America. She earned her bachelor’s degree from Boston University, where she was on the Dean’s List. Ms. Thorpe attended Wellesley College and earned a diplôme from the University of Paris. She lives in Connecticut.
