Mr. Benathen has served as a law clerk to two Associate Justices of the Supreme Court of the State of New York, Appellate Division, First Department. Most recently, he was Principal Law Clerk to the Honorable Lizbeth González. Previously, he was Assistant Law Clerk to the Honorable Ellen Gesmer. In these roles, Mr. Benathen worked closely with the justices in their review of appeals from the trial courts of New York and Bronx counties, including appeals in family and commercial matters. Mr. Benathen aided in the drafting of several majority and dissenting opinions that have been discussed in leading New York legal treatises and cited by New York’s state and federal courts.

In addition to clerking, Mr. Benathen has worked as a trial and appellate litigator with two New York City public defender organizations: The Bronx Defenders and The Center for Appellate Litigation.

Mr. Benathen received his J.D., magna cum laude, from the University of Illinois College of Law. He received his B.S. with honors in Media, Culture, and Communication, magna cum laude, from New York University.

Mr. Benathen was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York and lives in Manhattan.
